November 5, 1978: Austria votes against atomic energy

PLANT TREES - AVERT NUCLEAR PERIL

05. November 2026
Forty-eight years ago today, Austrian voters cast their ballots against the start operations at the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in a national referendum. This vote marked the permanent end of civil nuclear power in the country and made Zwentendorf the world's only nuclear power plant that was fully built and outfitted, but never actually brought into operation.

Hundertwasser frequently warned of the dangers of nuclear energy and donated the poster "PLANT TREES - AVERT NUCLEAR PERIL" to Ralph Nader's Critical Mass Energy Project in Washington. In the following years, the poster was featured in numerous anti-nuclear campaigns as well as by various grassroots citizen initiatives worldwide.
